The McHenry Township Fire Protection District (MTFPD) was dispatched on December 11, 2021, at 22:19 hours to the 500 block of Sunrise Drive in unincorporated McHenry County for a reported structure fire.

Fire crews arrived in under six minutes and found a split-level home with fire coming out the front door and windows. Fire crews worked to extinguish the fire and search the house for occupants. MABAS Box 5-1272 was activated to the Box level bringing additional water to the scene as the area does not have fire hydrants. The fire was brought under control fifty minutes after the fire department's arrival. Crews remained on the scene for several hours, overhauling the building and conducting a fire investigation. One person escaped the home with the assistance of first arriving police officers.

The damage to the structure was substantial, and the home has been deemed uninhabitable. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the McHenry Township Fire Protection District, the McHenry County Sheriff's Office, and the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal. One civilian was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A firefighter also sustained a minor injury and was treated at the scene.

The MTFPD received assistance from the following fire departments: Cary, Fox Lake, Nunda, Richmond, Spring Grove, Wauconda, Wonder Lake, Woodstock, Lake Villa, Round Lake, and Mundelein.
