Fire Service History: Red and Green Lights on the Firehouse?

There are a few different answers. More commonly are the nautical reasons. Green on right; meaning that when a piece of equipment is returning or out, the light is on so that in the dark they can find their way home. Thus, knowing that the house is on the starboard side.

This helps boats when entering the break waters to not strike the walls or shore. This does go along with the saying, “red on the port side”.

Some departments do display these color schemes on the apparatus they run, such as, Chicago where the tradition was started and believed to have originated.
